poSTMODERNISM IN MUSIC VIDEOS
JESSIE J- WHO'S LAUGHING NOW
At the beginning and throughout the music video there is intertextuality; with links to the film 'Mean Girls'. The girls on the right of this screenshot represent the stereotypical 'nasty' girls, who are seem to bully other girls who are seemingly different. This group of girls are extremely similar to those who are in the film. |
The video also represents hyper-reality as Jessie J plays multiple characters. This reinforces that watch is being watched is not real and that when something is re-recorded it is not actual reality and is not completely the truth. These multiple characters appear to over-exaggerate themselves in their roles and how they appear and behave. For example, the teacher appears strict and looks extremely bored. it is obvious to the audience that teachers in today's world would not dress like this. |
Although hyper-reality is created with Jessie J playing multiple characters, it is clear from the outset that the main character is in fact Jessie J when she was younger. The whole music video is based around Jessie's personal experience of school and how she was mistreated by others.
This also causes the audience to question whether they are experiencing this through the eyes of younger Jessie J or if it is all a flashback. This is due to the constant switching of camera angles and who is the main focus on each shot. For example, the camera is either focused on younger Jessie J or her in the 'present day'. |
