Contrasting lighting will be used throughout my music video to help reinforce the emotions created. For example, when the young male flash backs to the 'happy memories' of him and his 'beloved', I will ensure that the lighting is bright. So that when it comes to editing, I can add rosey/pink tints. This creates the sense of nostalgia and will reflect the narrative of how his relationship can be seen as positive/dandy, when in reality it’s full of problems and is extremely negative. However, when he's bought back to his harsh reality, the mise-en-scene will reflect this. The contrasting depressing sense is similar to that in Passion Pit's "Take a Walk", where the up-beat tempo conflicts with the distressing narrative. It will be very mono-tone and dull to portray the male’s feelings. The locations that I will use vary depending on the scene that I am filming for. When filming for the scenes of the young male living his harsh reality, I will use more isolated locations with a run-down, distressing sense.
As the video is revolved around domestic abuse, it would be inappropriate for my artist to be the protagonist- as it could harm the brand identity. I am however going to include the artist in the narrative and have him play the abuse victim’s best friend, as it can still reflect a personal connection between the artist and the narrative.
The mise-en-scene within my website will include a very dark, mono tone colour palette to reflect the artists brand identity; similar to Lewis Capaldi’s. Although the artist’s songs may appear to be up-beat, the narrative behind them is more sinister.
With the use of fast paced editing and cutting to the beat in the appropriate areas, I will be able to add a suitable tempo; increasing the audience’s engagement. Media language will be applied in various ways, one being through postmodernism. I will do this through the use of social media and how the concept of 'hyper-reality' is becoming truth. This also helps to reflect the lives of my specific social group (young adults).
The focus of my narrative will revolve around the stereotypes within domestic abuse and how it is seen as stereotypical for the male to abuse his female partner. My protagonist challenges this stereotype as he is being abused by his female partner. I hope by including such a serious, contemporary issue that it will open the audience’s eyes to the fact that this happens in modern society and will also raise awareness for this type of situation.
To help boost my artists brand identity and to meet the demands of the record label, I will include multiple close-ups of both the artist and the protagonist in the music video. As well as lip syncing of just my artist to meet typical conventions of a music video.
I intend to include various images of the artist within the website to increase his familiarity within the music industry. The website will contain a live link to the music video so that the video can reach a wider audience and expand its popularity. Clay Shirky suggests that with live interactions being available on the website, there is more of a relationship building between the individuals and media. I will also complete this by including social media buttons.
